#731-What is Repentance?
Repentance (Metanonia) is to turn mind and thought from sin and to change mind and purpose so as to believe in the gospel and enter into the Kingdom of God. We must repent to receive the Spirit of God as a gift; onl y those who belong to the truth may enter the Kingdom of God. Grace is the forgiveness in Jesus Christ; the truth is the work of life which leads us to the Kingdom of God. The Bible is the record of life which is in Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must repent to enter the Law, the elementary teaching to Christ, and to advance to faith.
Legalistic repentance is the repentance of John the Baptist, confessing sins and seeking forgiveness, and happens when we first meet the Lord. But, there is also a repentance of salvation, the repentance of truth and rebirth, which happens through the Cross when we meet Christ, the Lord of resurrection, taking off the old self. As for repentance, “yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and abounding in steadfast love, and relent from punishing (Joel 2:12-13).” The highest level of faith in the Old Testament is the repentance by confessing sins and seeking for forgiveness. But, the faith in the Bible is to come to the truth.
Repentance must be done onc e for all by meeting Jesus Christ; we must proceed to rebirth into a new being made whole in truth at the lead of the Holy Spirit. Salvation is in the truth. The flesh that is not crucified is the body of sin and death (Genesis 3:14), which belongs to Satan. They are easily caught in the accusation of Satan. Peter followed the Lord for 3 and half years; but, he was caught in the accusation of Satan because he did not realize that his body must have been crucified.
Prideful Peter was truly remorseful by understanding the weakness of flesh upon his denial of the Lord three times. Peter later understood everything as he met and was taught by he resurrected Lord. Likewise, we must meet the resurrected Lord, understand the weakness of the flesh, and crucify old self to die to sins. Only then does our body of sin die and never again become the slave to sin so as to achieve the repentance of rebirth, just like the repentance of Peter for the second time.
